Astronotes #206  Corresponds to Previews #287  (September 2012)

Hey, hi, howdy, and welcome to Astronotes #206, where our belief is that if angels are messangers of God, they must be pinioned minions. I suppose the most famous of these would be Joseph Smith, founder of the Mormons, who actually was tarred and feathered by townsfolk in the east before he started his westward trek to Utah. Presumably Smith's neighbours used regular chicken feathers, Moroni keeping his own.

Had a visit from an angel chimpanzee the other day, who said "Buying many, many comic books is good for the soul."
But that's just a simian pinioned minion's opinion.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++MARVEL COMICS

On the other hand, Marvel has tons of new stuff!
Why look, not just dull old "Incredible" Hulk, but the Indestructible Hulk. If he's indestructible, I guess we don't have to worry about him too much, do we?
And there's the All New X-Men!
Not just the "New" X-Men (which they tried about 12-15 years ago, but All new. So I guess we can't expect any appearances by, oh, Wolverine or Cyclops or Iceman or anyone- they’re not new...
Iron Man! Thor God Of Thunder! Captain America!
Look: We won't be doing any of this "11R" nonsense as Marvel copies DC's relaunch in Marvel's usual haphazard way, we'll just continue each series with its new numbering, unless you tell us not to.

47 RONIN #1 (OF 5)

Mike Richardson (W) and Stan Sakai (A/Cover)

On sale Nov 7

FC, 32 pages$3.99 Miniseries

Among the best-known tales in Japanese history, the legend of the 47 Ronin and their epic mission to avenge their disgraced master epitomizes the samurai code of honor. It has been said, "To know the story of the 47 Ronin is to know Japan." Retold through the ages, the legend at last comes to comics in a meticulously researched and beautifully illustrated miniseries from Mike Richardson, Stan Sakai, and editorial consultant Kazuo Koike! Recounting this sweeping tale of honor and violence in all its grandeur, chapter one details the tragic incident that would seal the fate of Lord Asano and set forty-seven of his vassals on a years-long path of vengeance!

A gorgeous new adaptation of Japan's enduring "national legend"!

- From writer Mike Richardson (The Secret) and artist Stan Sakai (Usagi Yojimbo)!

Created in consultation with manga giant Kazuo Koike (Lone Wolf and Cub)!

An interesting choice of subject: The "47 Ronin" (or 47 Samurai) is one of the more ludicrous bits of world history. Essentially, around 1700, a Japanese gang leader tried to kill an imperial  court official (cabinet minister), and failed. The gang boss was sentenced to commit suicide for his crime. Once he did that, his samurai minions, now being unemployed, lost their "samurai" rank and became "ronin" (jobless thugs). Being unemployed, they were dishonored, so they killed the cabinet minister, finishing the job their boss started. Caught, they were ordered to commit suicide in penance, which they did. End of the story.
A tale of a bunch of extremely violent lemmings. Little more than a biker war gotten out of control.

Well, this month Dark Horse solicited "BPRD: Hell On Earth: Whatever #4 of 5" as "BPRD Hell On Earth #101, Whatever #4 of 5", finally dropping that idiotic "each story arc is a new miniseries crap, and making the numbering continuous. It's good to see that. That "series of series" idea is one that we retailers fought out with them over ten years ago, finally convincing them to stop it on books like Usagi Yojimbo and Oh My Goddess.
What we're gonna do is add "BPRD Hell On Earth" to people's list as you order it, and just continue the whole series numbering as it moves through story arcs. Makes life simpler for everyone. Now let's hope they do the same for titles like "Star Wars Knight Errant" and...

Tasked with finding "The Others," Silver Star put together a rag-tag family of powerful individuals in a newly post-superhuman world. Thirty years ago the king of comics, Jack Kirby, created, wrote, and drew the adventures of "homo-geneticus" and what an all-powerful superhuman meant to war, society, and death. This story is the continuing adventures of the most powerful man on the planet and what he's been up to for thirty years. He's been busy! Collecting Kirby: Genesis - Silver Star #1-6 along with a complete cover gallery featuring Alex Ross, Jae Lee and Mark Buckingham.

BARNABY VOLUME ONE HC

(W/A) Crockett Johnson

Introduction by Chris Ware

$35.00 / HC / 336 pgs / PC / 10.5 x 6.3

Fantagraphics introduces Barnaby, with its playful mix of fantasy, wit and elegantly spare images, to a new generation of children and parents. Created by Crockett Johnson (Harold and the Purple Crayon) in the 1940s, this five-volume series, with art direction by graphic novelist Daniel Clowes (Ghost World), will collect the entirety of the original newspaper strips.

I dunno- Barnaby is beloved by the "cognoscenti". It's about a little kid and his cigar-chomping fairy godfather, Mr.O'Malley (who nobody but Barnaby can see). It was quite a sensation, truly "critically acclaimed", but was maybe a bit too clever for its time. It only lasted ten years or so, a pretty short lifespan as strips go. Maybe I'm just a lout: I've gotten Barnaby books from time to time, (they're pretty scarce), and while I found them amusing, they didn't grab me enough to go searching for them (as L'il Abner and Smilin' Jack once did).

JUDGE DREDD #1

Duane Swierczynski (w) - Nelson Daniel, Paul Gulacy (a) Zach Howard, Ashley Wood, Jim Starlin, Whilce Portacio (c)

In the 22nd century, crime runs rampant in Mega-City One, home to over 400 million citizens, robots, criminals and lunatics. The only line of defense between anarchy and chaos are the Judges. And Judge Dredd is the toughest of them all. In this, Judge Dredd's 35th anniversary year, IDW is proud to re-introduce Judge Dredd to America in this all-new ongoing series.

FC  32 pages  $3.99

Doesn't "subscription" just sound a whole lot ...classier than "pullbox"? Of course this is just copying the same stunt that Valiant pulled a few months back with their introductory variants. Whatever, whatever. There's nothing limited or scarce about these things- they'll print to order, so if you want the sub variant, just ask, and your wish shall be our command.
Of course, just about everyone's familiar with Dredd, but not all that many folks around here read it. Here's our chance to get new stories, with probably a bit less British sensibility to them. IDW's also offering a complete Wagner/Bolland oversized (9x12) hardcover this month, a bit pricey at $50 for 228 pages, but worth every penny:

JUDGE DREDD: THE COMPLETE BRIAN BOLLAND

John Wagner (w) - Brian Bolland (a & c)

Mega-City One, 2099. This vast urban nightmare has sprung up from the post-apocalyptic ashes of North America's east coast. Each of the 400 million citizens based there is a potential criminal and only the Judges can prevent total anarchy. These future lawmen are judge, jury, and executioner. Toughest of them all is Judge Dredd-he is the Law! By the end of 1977 Brian Bolland was regularly handling art chores for John Wagner's scripts on Judge Dredd. All told, he illustrated 20 stories.

A TREASUARY OF VICTORIAN MURDER COMPENDIUM VOLUME 1 HC

(W/A/CA) Rick Geary

In this first omnibus volume from Geary's increasingly storied Treasuries of Murder: the first trilogy of murders that made up the very first volume of this series, Jack the Ripper as only he can narrate it, The Beast of Chicago about H.H. Holmes, possibly the first serial murderer with chilling methodical means and The Fatal Bullet about the assassination of president James Garfield. (STK475586)

HC, 6x9, 228pgs, B&W$24.99

I've kinda liked Rick Geary's rather quirky art style since I first encountered it in (I think it was) National Lampoon, back in the early 70's. Geary has a 40-year career going? How'd that happen? He must be old!
Anyways, this anthology covers an interesting little point of American history: Robert Todd Lincoln (Abraham's son) once refused to attend an event to which he was invited by either President Theodore Roosevelt or Woodrow Wilson (I forget which). He claimed he'd rather stay away, because he was bad luck for presidents. You see, he was nearby when his father was shot, and spent the night at Abraham's side as he lay dying. He was about to meet Garfield at the Washington train station when he was shot, and was nearby when McKinley was killed in Buffalo. It's not like Lincoln was a stalker or anything- he was a member of both president's cabinets.
After McKinley I don't think he held any cabinet posts- that "jinx" thing understandably made him want to keep away.

Okay, why the segue into Todd Lincoln? Because he was there when Garfield was assassinated, and Garfield's in Geary's book. So must be the killer himself; Charles Guiteau. Now he was nuts. A little "tell" was that he was kicked out of the Oneida cult because even they thought he was insane. At trial, his defense largely rested on his claim that he didn't kill Garfield, the doctors did by screwing up the treatment. He was probably actually right in this claim, but they hung him anyways.
Guiteau's also indirectly responsible for a little oddity of presidential history: Garfield's vice-president (and successor in the oval office) was Chester A. Arthur, who was nominally from Northern Vermont, although many believe he was actually born in Quebec. US presidents must be native born, witness the yammering by the rightpits over Obama's birth certificate.
So thanks to "Chuck Amuck" Guiteau, we have a possible Canadian born US president.
Guiteau apparently also wrote a letter to Arthur, asking for a pardon and a job, pointing out that Arthur owed him, for getting that Garfield jerk out of the way. Arthur's exact response is unknown, but it was something along the lines of "He's nuts, not me. We don't need fruitcakes like that out roaming around. Stretch his neck."

Back to tar & feathers for a moment:
About 20 years ago, we had a customer who was a German tank officer in WWII. As far as I know, he never got into actual combat- the closest he came was getting strafed on his way to what became the Battle of the Bulge. Anyways, one winter's day while stationed near Paris, he saw a girl slip and fall on the ice. He helped her up, and escorted her home. He spoke to her father, asking permission to call on her. Even 40-50 years later he was quite nonplussed that her father refused this request, contending that despite our man's honourable intentions, the neighbours would literally tar and feather the daughter if she were to consort with a German soldier. He finally came to understand that he was the enemy, an occupying soldier, and she would be seen as a collaborationist if they dated. Nice guy, but not the brightest bulb in the basket.
And that's my one and only tar & feathering story.
By the way, ever notice that a snowstorm kinda looks like an explosion of eiderdown? Maybe that's why they call a blizzard "fowl weather"...

Okay, I'll go away now.

...and that's it for another month, where once again there's a fair amount of good looking new stuff, but it's not from the "big two", and it's kinda obscured by all the reprints.
