Astronotes #213  Corresponds to Previews April 2013

Hey, hi, howdy, and welcome to Astronotes #213, where it looks like a muse has finally dropped by the DC and Marvel offices, shooting a few bullets of inspiration at random folks. Now note that those are Nerf bullets, not lead, so things haven't gotten crazily out of control. Nonetheless, I count 8 newish projects for DC, pretty much equalling their total newish output over the last six months, with two for Marvel. At least they can't be accused of "glutting the market" this time around. The surprise publishers are Image, which usually has at least a few new things, but this month has only one, and Dark Horse: I tagged DH as having five newish projects, but that was really being overly generous, it's more reasonable to call it three, the other two just being the latest Empowered and Baltimore squibs.
Given that, if you take all of Marvel's fresh offerings, and add them to all of Image's, you equal Dark Horse's. Exciting, huh?
Okay, so you can't really complain that the publishers are squeezing your wallets empty, but there is some pretty good looking stuff this month that might (I hope) just loosen your pursestrings a bit, so read on, MacDuff!

You'll notice that a big-name creator from issue #1 isn't here for #2. Of course that would be Orson Scott Card. As I get it, the story is that Chris Sprouse, who was scheduled to take over the artwork told DC that he wouldn't work with OSC because of the rabid homophobia thing. DC said "Okay, we'll find another artist." Then they figured it would be wise to dump OSC as well, in consideration of the amount of bad press they've gotten over his involvement. They haven't blacklisted him or anything, just pushed him aside until they have a lower-profile project suitable to his talents (Deathstroke maybe? That's about as low-profile as you can get, yuck yuck.) Anyways, you can criticize DC for bowing to interest-group pressure in dumping OSC if you want, but I bet they miss a trick, and they won't be showing that hoary old comic book blurb on the cover: "BECAUSE YOU DEMANDED IT": A new writer!
To me, dumping Card is a good thing, in that I just don't like his attitude, and he doesn't sell all that well, anyways. Oeming's just as talented, but he has a history of being woefully slow (especially when teamed with Bendis). At least he's not some Ruby Ridge style bible- thumping wacko...

INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US #6

I'll take this opportunity for a little "thank you":
Diamond recently did an "oops", and shortshipped us several copies of "Injustice: Gods Among Us #2. Enough that we were 3 copies shy of filling reserve orders. This usually isn't a problem, they just replace from extras at the warehouse, but not this time- there were none. Kyle, our ace customer service rep at Diamond, did a bunch of calling around, and connected us with Marc, over at Studio 9 up on St.Hubert St., who could spare a few copies. Betty went up there on Friday, picked them up. and everybody's happy. Many thanks to Kyle for once again cleaning up one of Diamond's little messes, but especially to Marc of Studio 9 on St.Hubert (near Beaubien), for being a nice guy, willing to help out a competitor in a bit of a bind.

The entire award-winning creative team is back to kick off a new epoch of the human and the super human. Get in on the ground floor of Astro City's next epic!

Hey- looks like we were wrong. (Can you imagine? Us wrong? Unbelievable, I know.)
Anyways, a couple of months ago, we called a customer who only had Astro City on his list, expressing our belief that it was gone, pelele, finished and fartik, never to return. Considering that the last issue shipped in 2010, that was a pretty safe bet. Well, Robert (if you're reading this), looks like we were wrong, because it's back, as an ongoing series, and with the original creators. Presuming that Kurt has his sinuses (if not his ego) under control, we might even be in store for something a bit more frequent than the "every once in a blue moon" schedule it ran on so many years ago.
Let's hope so, because this was just one terrific title back in the late 90's, and there's no reason to think it can't be great again.
I do hope that Anderson reverts to his original style, though: I didn't much like the grim artwork he employed in the "Dark Ages", even though it was appropriate to the story content. No question that his art was good, I just didn't much like it.

Okay, I apologise in advance for this:
One of the Astro City characters is Acceleration Ace, a Flash-like super speedster. Another is the vigilante called Jack-In-The-Box.
So in the "New 52", if Gotham's "court" decided to take Central City's speedster, merge him with Mr. In-The Box, and create the latest Talon, he could prance around a stage singing, "It's Owl right, I'm Jumpin' Jack Flash, it's a gas, gas, gas..."
Okay, I apologise to Mick Jagger too.

That's about enough of this. Just remember to add Astro City to your list at Astro Books!

THE SANDMAN OMNIBUS VOL. 1 HC

Written by NEIL GAIMAN

Art by VARIOUS

Cover by DAVE McKEAN

On sale AUGUST 21 - 1,040 pg, FC, 150.00 US - MATURE READERS

This massive hardcover collects THE SANDMAN #1-37 and THE SANDMAN SPECIAL #1-the first half of Neil Gaiman's acclaimed horror classic. Upon his escape from captivity at the hands of a mortal, Morpheus must deal with the changes within himself and his realm. His journey to find his place in the world takes him through mythical worlds to retrieve his belongings, the backroads of America for a twisted reunion, and even Hell itself.

For $150 you get a reprint written by Neil Gaiman. I guess that fifteen-buck Black Orchid TPB is written by some other guy whose parents couldn't afford four whole letters for a first name. Maybe Bob Gaiman, or Tom or something. Just kidding.
But you never know what's going to start me spewing out my geezerdotes:
When I was little, we lived across the street from a kid named "Neil" (not Gaiman, just Neil). He and my brother hated each other. Every once in a while, Neil would come across the street to ask my mother to tell brother Bernie that when they got into a fight, Bernie shouldn't kick Neil "in the texasculs". Neil's brother Freaky (he must have had a real name, but we never knew what it was) recently told us that Neil died just a couple of years ago, (somewhat unsurprisingly) childless.

Jack Schiff, Bill Finger (w) - Curt Swan, Wayne Boring (a) - Pete Poplaski (c)

In partnership with DC Entertainment, the Eisner Award-winning imprint will produce deluxe archival editions of the Superman newspaper strip that ran from 1939-1966. The book includes almost 800 strips, the complete episodes from December 15, 1958 - July 1, 1961. This is the series Superman fans have been waiting for!

HC - B&W - $49.99 - 288 pages - 11" x 8.5"

Speaking of Krypton, I've long wondered: Who died when the planet exploded? The population of Kandor lived on, thanks to the "evil" Braniac, Argo City blew off into space intact, complete with its own atmosphere, pets, and a massive supply of lead sheets. Then there's Supes himself, and let's not forget all the random critters that have shown up over the years or the seemingly endless number of miscreants imprisoned in the Phantom Zone...
So who died? Jor-El and Lara, of course, and that seems to be about it.
Speaking of Jor-El, what is that thing encircling his head? It never moves, doesn't dent his hair, and there's never been any indication that ol' Jor could play a guitar like Mark Knopfler so it doesn't appear to be a sweatband. All I can guess is that amongst his other accomplishments, Jor-El invented a machine that spray paints very precise stripes around people's noggins.

FC - 32 pages - $3.99

Hey, I've got an idea: Why not revise this a bit, and instead of it being in the sky, have it set on the ocean somewhere? You could call it something like "Waterworld". Betcha if you made it into a movie starring some big name "slightly past best before date" actor like George Clooney or Kevin Costner, it would be a big hit. Or maybe not.

1)   LAZARUS #1

story GREG RUCKA

art/cover MICHAEL LARK

JUNE 26

32 PAGES / FC / M$2.99

FAMILY: Part One-In a dystopian near-future, government is a quaint concept, resources are coveted, and possession is 100% of the law. A handful of Families rule, jealously guarding what they have and exploiting the Waste who struggle to survive in their domains. Forever Carlyle defends her family's holdings through deception and force as their protector, their Lazarus. Shot dead defending the family home, Forever's day goes downhill from there!.

Ever notice that people (mostly in the past) actually did name their kids things like "Forever", "Faith", "Hope", "Charity", "Constance", even "Goodman"? Well, maybe not "Forever", but the others are all real first names. My favorite oddball name of that type? Well, it's a story (of course):
Back when I was a kid in the 1950's, from time to time we'd go to the museum in Elizabethtown NY. Cool place- they had a real stagecoach on display, along with a bunch of other neat stuff. Amongst the displays was a portrait of a renowned judge whose name stuck with me for decades. He has been described as one of the greatest judicial philosophers the United States ever produced, one whose opinions have been quoted in more Supreme Court rulings than any other jurist's. Apparently the only reason he was never appointed to the SCOTUS himself was that his politics weren't in favour with the current president when an appointment became available.
The freakout for me came when I discovered that he wasn't just some old dead guy- he was still alive when I saw his picture (he died in 1961).
And that "favorite oddball name?
Well, can there possibly be a better name for a revered judge than his: Learned Hand?
I recall reading some years back that he had a cousin who was also a judge, whose name was (Augustus) Noble Hand. One of Learned's daughters was named Constance.  I suppose their cousin, the car mechanic, might have been named "Greasy Hand"...

And don't think you're gonna get off that easy: I used the acronym "SCOTUS" there. It's popular amongst political bloggers writing about the Supreme Court Of The United States. Reminds me of a time some years back when I was checking into a hotel in Jackson Tennessee. Some other guys with TV cameras were also checking in, and I asked why they were there.  A bunch of tornados had hit Tennessee that day, and they were there to cover the story, what with POTUS coming in the next day. Now POTUS (for President Of The United States) was a term I was familiar with, having read plenty of books by the likes of Vince Flynn and such, but I never realized it was actually used in conversation.
I guess if DC had carried this Batman "Owls" thing any farther they would have called it SCOTO.
Enough.
