Astronotes #220 Corresponds to Previews November 2013
Hey,
hi, howdy and welcome to Astronotes #220.
The most impressive publisher this month is Marvel, with at least a half-dozen
new projects in the works. The least impressive is also Marvel, simply because
they're resurrecting Marvel UK, the line that killed the "Marvel
zombie" phenomenon and helped bring about the "Marvel implosion"
around twenty years ago, when their "let's crowd every other publisher off
the racks" strategy was such a spectacular failure. I remember quite a few
people, who were Marvel completists giving up their pursuit on the basis that
MUK wasn't real Marvel, it was ...garbage. It wasn't long before the erosion
spread to the 2099 line, the Barkerverse, Heavy Hitters, and eventually the
main Marvel Universe itself.
Now, the MUK wasn't garbage, far from it. It was just done with a British sort
of styling, particularly a lot more sci-fi and wit than was comfortable for
North American audiences. Since then, thanks at least in part to the net
turning this into a true global village, we've become accustomed to things that
used to be "foreign" but are
now part of our much larger culture, witness stuff like the greater North
American popularity of Judge Dredd, Dr.Who, and even manga. So who knows,
possibly the time is finally ripe for Dark Angel, Death's Head, and maybe even
the Sleeze Brothers.
I guess we'll find out soon enough...

GASOLINE ALLEY VOLUME 1: THE COMPLETE SUNDAYS 1920-1922 HC
Frank King (W/A/Cover)
On sale Mar 5
FC, 128 pages $75.00
HC, 12" x 16"
Dark Horse is proud to present the first in a series that will collect all the Sunday pages of the classic newspaper strip Gasoline Alley, in chronological order! Collects every Gasoline Alley Sunday strip from 1920 through 1922.
1920-1922? 128 pages? Let's see: 3 years @ 52 pages per
year = 156 pages, not 128. Oh well, take a bit of time off, and I suppose...
Sure wish I had a job that allowed me to take off 28 days...
Anyways, this project is gonna be gigantic: Gasoline Alley is still running,
and I calculate it's going to take 3,968 pages to cover all the Sundays- that's
a big book!
And of course that's if they print them all now, not if they do it over time.
It gets 40+ pages longer with each passing year. The remarkable thing about
Gasoline Alley was that it was one of the very few (if not only) strip that had
the characters age. If Walt's still around he's about 125 or so. Skeezix is in
his 90's.
ARCHIE ARCHIVES VOLUME 9 HC
Bill Vigoda (A), Irv Novick (A), and Al Fagaly (A)

FC, 240 pages $59.99

Dark Horse Comics and Archie Comics team up once again to bring you over 200 pages of sidesplitting high jinks from the Golden Age of Archie! The gang's all here: "typical teenager" Archie Andrews, his best pal Jughead, his eternal rival Reggie, and his lovely girlfriends Betty and Veronica-and when these zany teens get together, the fun just never stops! Put some Pep in your step and have a laugh with Archie! Collecting every Archie appearance from Archie Comics #29-#31, Pep Comics #65-#67, and Laugh Comics #25-#26! Foreword by multiple Eisner Award-winning creator Jill Thompson (Beasts of Burden)!
Hm. Speaking of old-timers (as I was with Gasoline Alley), Archie artist Bill Vigoda may no longer be with us, but his brother, Abe, now in his 90's, still is. I check that website every once in a while, just to be sure.

DEADLY CLASS #1
story RICK REMENDER
art / covers WESLEY CRAIG & LEE LOUGHRIDGE
JANUARY 22
32 PAGES / FC / M$3.50
It's 1987. Marcus Lopez hates school. His grades suck. He has no money. The jocks are hassling his friends. He can't focus in class, thanks to his mind constantly drifting to the stunning girl in the front row and the Dag Nasty show he has tickets to. But the jocks are the children of Joseph Stalin's top assassin, the teachers are members of an ancient league of assassins, the class he's failing is "Dismemberment 101," and his crush, a member of the most notorious crime syndicate in Japan, has a double-digit body count.
Welcome to the most brutal high school on Earth, where the world's top crime families send the next generation of assassins to be trained. Murder is an art. Killing is a craft. At King's Dominion High School for the Deadly Arts, the dagger in your back isn't always metaphorical, nor is your fellow classmates' poison.
Join writer RICK REMENDER with rising star WESLEY CRAIG (Batman) and legendary colorist LEE LOUGHRIDGE (Fear Agent) to reminisce about the mid-1980s underground through the eyes of the most damaged and dangerous teenagers on Earth.
MINIMUM WAGE #1
story / art / cover BOB FINGERMAN
JANUARY 8
32 PAGES / BW / M$3.50
After a nearly 15-year hiatus, BOB FINGERMAN's edgy, critically-acclaimed title returns as a monthly. When last we left Rob and Sylvia they were exchanging vows at the altar. Three years later (in Rob's world), much has changed. Rob has a cell phone. He's 25. And oh yeah - spoiler alert - he's single again. Oops. Living again with his mom, it's get-back-on-the-horse time as the daunting prospect of dating looms large as a horny Kraken.
I wonder if this will make it through Diamond's
"customs filter" into Canada. The original Minimum Wage was pretty
raunchy sometimes, and Diamond's a lot more cautious about vetting questionable
content through import officialdom than any of he Canadian distributors ever
were. I hope it does come in. Minimum Wage was an engaging story, very well
told, and even if Fingerman's art style is a bit cartoony, it's good. Off the top of my head, the closest thing I
can think of to Minimum Wage was "True Story Swear To God". In a way.
Provided of course that TSSTG was set in pre-Guiliani New York City, not the
Napa Valley and Puerto Rico,
Anyways, good book. Try it.

Well, we blew it again: I remember when Miracleman
individual issues, priced in our bins at a buck would only eventually go when
they were 90% off at the 9-9-9 sale. Aaand there were the TPBs that moved
incredibly slowly. Then, when prices went astronomical on eBay, I was dismayed
to find that we had, in fact, cleaned out all of that old crap. Last I heard,
the "Red King" TPB, which even our distributors were clearing at
$2-$3 a pop were fetching close to $100! So we blew it. We could have hung on
and made some egregiously exorbitant money on those things, but we sold 'em
cheap. We're such fools.
Anyways, the little spat between Dez Skinner, Neil Gaiman and their assorted
Brit pals suing (and being countersued) by just about everybody in the
publishing end of things on this side of the Atlantic seems to be over. Well,
just about everybody- seems to me Marvel said that a chunk of the action for
the original 1602 series was earmarked to help Gaiman finance his end of the
legal proceedings.
So now folks can finally read the thing without having to mortgage the house.
That's good. Very good. Frankly I don't know how well Angelo, Moore, Gaiman et
al's story that was cutting edge (and ahead of its time) will hold up today: I
mean we've seen so many dysfunctional superheroes, from Watchmen to Dark Knight
to Major Bummer since then, and the art, while solid was kinda muddy to boot.
Bottom line? Like Wally Wood's "Disneyland Memorial Orgy" poster, if
you can get a peek at it, it's worth a look. Now at last you can take a look at
this legendary, almost lost, work.

What's gross?
When you take your octogenarian great-aunt to the airport, and when she kisses
you good-bye she slips her tongue in your ear?
-Nah. Gross is when they do a comic book adaptation of a movie.
-Even more gross is when they do a comic book adaptation of a movie that's
already a live-action adaptation of a comic book.
-Grossest of all would be if they did a comic book adaptation of movie that's a live-action adaptation of a
Marvel UK comic book.
-That will never happen. They won't risk it:
Remember what committing crimes against humanity got for Saddam Hussein?
Oh, come on, try it anyways. It's bound to be swollen swell.

O/A LOU SCHEIMER: CREATING FILMATION GENERATION SC
(W) Andy Mangels (A) Lou Scheimer
Hailed as one of the fathers of Saturday morning television, Lou Scheimer was the co-founder of Filmation Studios, which for over 25 years provided animated excitement for TV and film. Always at the forefront, Scheimer's company created the first DC cartoons with Superman, Batman, and Aquaman, ruled the song charts with The Archies, kept Trekkie hope alive with the Emmy-winning Star Trek: The Animated Series, taught morals with Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, and swung into high adventure with Tarzan, The Lone Ranger, and Zorro. Forays into live-action included Shazam! and The Secrets of Isis, plus ground-breaking special effects work on Jason of Star Command and others. And in the 1980s, Filmation single-handedly caused the syndication explosion with He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and its successors. Now, with best-selling co-author Andy Mangels, Lou Scheimer tells the entire story, including how his father decked Adolf Hitler, memories of the comic books of the Golden Age, schooling with Andy Warhol, and what it meant to lead the last all-American animation company through nearly thirty years of innovation and fun! Profusely illustrated with photos, model sheets, storyboards, presentation art, looks at rare and unproduced series, and more - plus hundreds of tales about Filmation's past, and rare Filmation-related art by Bruce Timm, Adam Hughes, Alex Ross, Phil Jimenez, Frank Cho, Gene Ha, and Mike McKone - this book shows the Filmation Generation the story behind the stories!
