ASTRONOTES #264  CORRESPONDS TO PREVIEWS JULY 2017

Hey, hi, howdy, and welcome to Astronotes #264. Bit of a departure this month: Due to some shenanigans on Diamond's part, I haven't really been able to go through everything before doing this intro as I usually do. Still, I seem to recall a few interesting things as I ran through the download working towards making the thing coherent..

(Hours & hours later): Hey- now I'm finally able to do this issue, my thanks to the ^&*%^*& IT people at Diamond who once again made large-scale changes in format without warning. I sincerely do hope, that they live  long and healthy lives, but, at the end, when nature takes its natural course, and they face the final curtain in full command of their faculties, they get to witness their "loved ones" squabbling over who gets to yank their teeth in search of gold fillings.

Already under considerable deadline pressure, I just lost over seven hours hammering the damned Previews text back to the perfectly good way it's been formatted for the past 20 years or so.
And somonabeach but it's a big one! There's eight new titles from DC and 11 from Marvel, along with their usual boatload of TPBs and hardcovers, so that's a pretty hefty bunch right there. And there's so much stufffrom the other publishers, ranging from "looks real good" to "ho-hum, pass". Trouble is, when dealing with indys, it's kinda hard to match them into people's lists, so I suspect the suggestion sheets might be a bit sparce, but if you guys give Astronotes a good perusal, I should be typing in your choices like crazy for the next while.
So don't let me stop you- peruse away!

HALLOWEEN COMIC FEST 2017
Well okay, it's time for the "Halloween comic fest" order, and as usual, the stinking basta clue-deprived catalog typists at Diamond have shown prices as "FREE" in Previews. Of course, that means free to people who show up at your door on Halloween. They're no more free to the retailers than are the candies Maxi or Dollarama stocks for homeowners to give away. And homeowners have to pay for them too. And so do you (unless, of course, you show up  on Halloween. We all have to cough up some coin if we want some to give away. I don't think there's any restrictions holding us to "Halloween Wednesday" release, 'cause that would be even more stupid than customary: "Halloween" Wednesday is November 1st this year. A little late to get Halloween giveaways, so I expect to get a memo to that effect any time now. Unless we do get some idiotic message like that, the usual Tuesday/Wednesday receipt/release schedule applies to whatever you guys are buying.
Speaking of buying, looks like the average price this year (per comic) is about 50¢. Bundles and packages are, of course, more, typically around $5..

When the skinny little notes here say "MINI", it means the comics are in a small format, usually 6"x9", and "POLY" indicates that they some in a plastic-wrapped bundle, usually with 25 comics inside.

Say, isn't Sinkhill an oxymoron, too? And speaking of suchlike, those celebs like Rush Limbaugh, Heath Ledger and Wynonna Ryder who stupidly get addicted to hillbilly heroin: I guess they're solid stoned oxy morons.
But along those lines, back when I was a boy racer, the national championship Tall Pines Rally always (and apparently still does) run a stage around Burning Lake, one of the waterholes in the Rideau Lakes system. As I recall it was about 8-10 km around it, on a not-too challenging dirt road, typically  with patches of late November snow and ice. I seem to remember 110-120 kph being an average speed. Of course, even at that speed, I don't think we were ever in better than 10th or 15th place on it...
Anyways, Burning Lake isn't really oxymoronic, not when you consider that the river that runs through Cleveland Ohio used to catch on fire every once in a while. But DownUp? Maybe there's (or was) a hill in Centralia Pa., where that underground mine fire's been burning since 1962, and the weakened ground has given way under most of the buildings, dropping them into the mines beneath. Who knows? Maybe the ground under a hill in town was weakened enough to create a sinkhole big enough to suck in the whole hill- Thus a sinkhill!
Finally, one of the guys in my stroke victim's physio group is named Hillyard. He doesn't much go in for wordplay. So I guess if he were to read this box, we'd have to calm him down. maybe by telling him; "Now don't raise a stink, Hill..."

Fred the Clown. Wow. Must be 10-15 years ago that I was snagged by Langridge's Hotel Fred, an unpopular book, probably because Langridge doesn't seem to be bound by current "rules" of comics success: No guns, no big fight scenes, just well-told vignettes that are often quite poignant. He has a drawing style that's reminiscent of Fleischer animation when he's working in color, and will sometimes go in for the kind of in-panel detail work that rivals both Will Elder and Don Rosa. When he feels like it. Everyone has their own muses, and Langridge seems to follow whichever one happens to be sitting on his shoulder at any given moment.
You never know what you're going to get with him, but you'll probably be charmed by it, whatever it might be, except, of course, for Knuckles the Malevolent Nun. That one was just disturbing.

Gilbert Shelton's been a favorite of mine since I first encountered his work in CarToons magazine back in the early sixties. Mind you, Wonder's ...creative use of his snout in dealing with "Lois Lane's" putting down Philbert Desanex (WWH's alter-ego) one time too many was special, and Shelton's "Advanced Motoring Tips", which appeared sporadically in various magazines were alway good (if sometimes lethal) advice.
Who can blame me for having the impressin that thy were kaput,  not having seen any new material for a couple of decades.
I'm certainly looking forward to getting "Fifty Freaking Years"...

The last Shelton treat I got was in 2008, whem the final DC RRP was held in Austin: We had dinner one night at a "supper club" that once featured Janis Joplin performing, and had numerous Shelton original works decorating the walls. I enjoyed the meal, although son Joseph swears there were teeth marks in his steak...
And speaking of Texas grub, we were put up in the local Hyatt, where the dining room waiter was perhaps just a wee bit pretentious. At one meal, he asken everyone if they wanted salad dressing: "And would moansur like ze vinaigrette?"  I replied "Merci, mais juste un peu de sel por moi.", "Uh whut?" Fer sure", and proceeded to drench my salad in glop... Fortunately a retailer from Scotland loved the stuff and polished mine off. (I guess it tasted like haggis or some other kind of Scottish "delicacy".)
