ASTRONOTES #266 CORRESPONDS TO PREVIEWS SEPTEMBER 2017

Hey, hi, howdy, and welcome to
Astronotes #266, where things are going remarkably smoothly this month! I'm
actually finished three days before the related Previews comes out, when I'm
usually done one or two days after.
Another pretty hefty batch of projects here- Dark Horse starts it off as
usual, with 3 new titles, then DC weighs in with 11, continuing their program
of resurrecting half-forgotten characters. This month it's Hawkman, the Demon,
anf Black Lightning. When's Johnny Cloud going to show up, flying an F-35
instead of his P-51?
Then, as usual there's IDW, Image (7), and Marvel with a theoretical 23,
although most of them are just re-numbering ongoing books into the
"legacy" scheme.

AMERICAS SWEETHEART (GN) from Black Mask and (believe it or not) the WWE
SURVIVORS SERIES 2017 SPECIAL #1 from Boom all stand out- the latter if for
no other reason than the local "venue".
Speaking of "local" stuff, those pictures up top are actual photos of
my paternal grandmother and grandfather. Doesn't she look like she should be
carrying a shotgun and hanging out with Bonnie & Clyde? He, on the other
hand looks like his toy of choice would be an anarchist's bomb.

Well how about that: Today is Aug
24, 2017, which happens to be the 70th birthday of Jim Fox, drummer for the
Ohio based rock band, the James Gang. They had a few hits back in the 70's. Of
couse they were a lot younger then. I guess that would make them the
James-Younger Gang.
A little earlier today, I was meandering around on Youtube, and happened to
click on a song I'd been wondering about for a good long time before finding it
a few years back: "Prisoner's Song" by Vernon Dalhart, an early 20th
Century country & western star. By coincidence of the day, "Prisoner's
Song" (which sold over 6 million records and was the biggest selling
record of all time for about 50 years, was auto-followed on Youtube by
"The Ballad of Jesse James", another one of Dalhart's big hits. And,
in a further (kinda coincidence, it's now the 25th, which, in 1819 was the
birthday of Allan Pinkerton, founder of both the detective agency, and the US
Secret Service, who once claimed that his company's only failed assignment was
the capture of Jesse James.
However, as the song goes,
"Jesse had a wife
To mourn for his life, three children, they were brave.
But that dirty little coward who shot Mr.Howard
Has laid poor Jesse in his grave."
So Mr.Pinkerton? Who needs you? Take a hike.

America and his sidekick, "Billy". Well, at least the sidekick's name
began with a "B", anyways, so they got that part right. I'll tell ya-
I really disliked that movie when I first saw it. Peter Fonda's part struck me
as being as cool as a parent using words that "kids today" use, or at
least that they use according to Time Magazine. Pretentious, and as impeccably
groomed as Kid Colt. Not in the least like the flea-bitten, fairly grubby
freaks I hung out with. Now Hopper reminded me of them. Along with his
attitude, he had a cooler bike,too. I mean it was an okay movie, but just okay.
Second time I saw the flick, I was with a little group that included a guy with
a headful of acid who started to shriek when it hit the scene where Jack
Nicholson gets beaten to death. The guy totally freaked, to the extent that the
rest of us had to get him out of there and over to St.Famille Street, where
there was a drop in clinic where we used to help out from time to time. We knew
they had Tang, which for some reason tended to wash away the "glass
shards" part of some acid trips. Anyways, I didn't much like the movie,
which struck me as dated, even in 1970. Mind you, for some reason I watched it
on Youtube a couple of years ago, and it wasn't nearly as bad as I remembered.
If you haven't seen it, by all means, hit Youtube- I think it was the whole
movie on there, and of course, Youtube's free. My favorite part? Just rolling
along to the Byrds' "I Wasn't Born to Follow". Gee I miss those days
of just jumping into a car and taking off for wherever the road happened to go.
You can wind up in some very very uninteresting places that way- Sudbury,
Sarnia, Steinbach, Sicamous, Ottawa...

Even with me not knowing anything about it, I remember the event because son
Joseph, who was 10 at the time (and a HUGE wrestling fan) was upset that his
favorite, Bret Hart, got shafted.
And of course it cranks up a geezerdote:
Back in the 1930's, my dad was a professional wrestler. The pay was something
like $5 for a loss, $10 for a win. Hey- it was the middle of the Great
Depression, and $10 was a good week's pay.
Anyways, this one bout, Dad was supposed to lose, but he really really disliked
his opponent, and actually beat the stuffing out of him, leaving him unconcious
on the floor. The ref gave Dad the hairy eyeball, knowing he was supposed to
lose, and the opponent actually being out cold making his victory a little hard
to justify. Dad just smiled, went over to the opponent, and kicked him in the
head. Disqualified for unsportsmanlike conduct, Dad did his job. Mom (who told
me the story) showed me the newspaper clipping she'd kept that reported on it.

again".
Again. Not the first time the crowd was enraged by Dad's badguy persona. In
fact some of the cops became buddies, and every once in a while a couple of
them would show up at the door, and they'd hit the back yard with Dad where they'd
all proceed to pound the snot out of each other, with assorted neighbors
leaning on the fences cheering them on.

Which of course reminded me of a tale from my youth:
Around 1970, a little bunch of us went to Toronto for the Mariposa Folk
Festival, where I discovered that a slice of bologna and an elasic band can
serve (in a pinch) as a juice bottle lid. Okay, so we're staying in this
"apartment", a one-room deal much like all those converted houses in
the McGill student ghetto. Turned out our "host" didn't actually live
there, he lived upstairs and had simply broken into this vacant unit. We didn't
stay all that long, the cops threw us out after a couple of hours. We spent the
rest of the night camped out on the steps of the Royal Ontario Museum.
The following night, one of the group (who was actually from Toronto), brought
us to his folks' home, where it was okay to stay. So you've got eight or nine
kids unrolling sleeping bags in a suburban living room. Nice place, nothing
special, except maybe for a big aquarium, holding a couple of sharks. At some
point one guy called out: "Hey look at the fucking sharks!"
Yeah, yeah, yeah, we saw the sharks. "No no! They're actually fucking!
Come see!"
Sure enough, that's what the critters were doing.
Frankly up until that moment I didn't know that sharks bred like that (they
do), nor that there were sharks small enough to fit in a fish tank. (There
are.)
