ASTRONOTES #257269 Corresponds to Previews December 2017

Hey, hi, howdy, and welcome to Astronotes #257. I guess it's #257- my archive thingy seems to be a little wonky. Or maybe it's just my head that's wonky. Took a whack in the head this week which could explain away a bit of confusion. Yeah- I'll blame the head bump. And it's actually #269.

Never content to leave well enough alone, I've messed around with the format of this thing again, but can't get it all perfectly screwed together in time to make our monthly upload deadline:
For the last 25 years or so each publisher's name was preceded by 32 plus signs, and justified right. This worked just dandy when we were doing actual printed copies of this thing, but we went "Playboy" style around #150 (online only), and now the eye naturally falls left on a new page rather than right. I do want to retain the +++++++++ to put a well-defined break between the publisher name and the book titles. I only started doing this around the "V" publishers this month. If you're curious, take a peek way down there.
Hell, never mind this "peeking nonsense: Start reading, I've counted over 60 "suggestable" titles so far, and I've only checked as far as the third publisher, IDW.

002   MATA HARI #1 (MR)

(W) Emma Beeby (A/CA) Ariela Kristantina

Dancer. Courtesan. Spy. Executed by a French firing squad in 1917.  100 years on from her death, questions are still raised about her conviction. Now, the lesser-known, often tragic story of the woman who claimed she was born a princess, and died a figure of public hatred with no one to claim her body, is told by breakout talent writer Emma Beeby (Judge Dredd), artist Ariela Kristantina (Insexts), and colorist Pat Masioni drawing on biographies and released MI5 files. In this first part of a five-issue miniseries, we meet Mata Hari in prison at the end of her life as she writes her memoir-part romantic tale of a Javanese princess who performed "sacred" nude dances for Europe's elite, and part real-life saga of a disgraced wife and mother, who had everything she loved taken from her. But, as she sits trial for treason and espionage, we hear another tale: one of a flamboyant Dutch woman who became "the most dangerous spy France has ever captured"-a double agent who whored herself for secrets, lived a life of scandal, and loved only money.  Leading us to ask... who was the real Mata Hari? Our back pages:  Many years ago, we got an Action Comics #2 in a (sort of trade with a fellow who was soon to leave Montreal. It took about a week to find it a new home, with someone who's a very serious (and astute) collector. The principal problem with the book? No back cover. The buyer had it partially restored, by Susan Ciccone, just about the best there is. No "increase the price" trickery here- the book, aside from the back cover, was so solid that he just wanted it secure enough so that when the inevitable question came up from visitors, "What's your oldest book?" he could hand them the second ever appearance of Superman to read without too much fear of damage. By the way, unless they've done it again recently, #2 was in the unique position of being the only issue of Action that didn't feature Superman on the cover.

#20? #20? Did I somehow not notice 19 issues of a DC title?
Nah. This is the first issue of this, and would have been #20 of New Supes. Did DC somehow fall into a time warp back to the early 50's, when industry wisdom said that newsstands didn't want to try new (and therefore untested) titles, so publishers would start at #17 or 9 or whatever. Off the top of my head, the EC title "A Moon A Girl Romance" #3 became "Weird Science Fantasy" #4. If that's what's happening, I suppose we might be seeing "Suction Comics" #1001 next month.
I somehow doubt that that one will actually happen, but if this does occur again, I want to see video of the DC staff singing "the pelvic thrust drives you insane-eayne-eyane".
Dan Didio would make a charming Riffraff, although the thought of him slimming down enough for the role is a bit of a mind flip...

I think it was Hawk & Dove that made me realize that not everything that Steve Ditko did was good. That or his early 60's Captain Atom. Whatever. With the caveat that my artistic taste is very rarely in sync with most people's, maybe it was just wonderful. By the way, this month (Nov 2) saw Ditko's 90th birthday. With the number of nonagenerians we regularly see in the industry, maybe staying in the field has some positive impact on longevity. Hey- maybe it works for readers too (hint hint).

Industry "legends" Ralph Macchio and Andrea Di Vito? Isn't that like saying legendary Montreal DJ Chucky Chandler or legendary Manitoba premier Duff Roblin? Yes, they were all accomplished achievers in their fields, but not all achievers attain legendary status. "Legend" and "legendary are rapidly becoming as ubiquitous and meaningless as "iconic" and "superstar".

But speaking of Egg Loaf (A Challa is a type of white bread featuring lots of egg in the mix), "Black Pather: Bla Bla is just getting too long for the amount of space available, and Marvel seems to be getting a little crazy over the character.
So how about if I just shorten it to things like
TCHALLA SOUND AND FURY or even better,
How about it folks? Anybody got a better idea?

Well, Ms.Wilson's parents blew it. The "G" stands for Gwendolyn, which is a much more spritely and pleasant name than one that would really make her stand out in the crowd, like Gertrude, Godzilletta or "Gaseous". "G.Willow" just sounds too pleasant.
Couldn't they have guessed that some day she'd be working for Marvel, where the word "pleasant" is considered an obscenity?

What is "Art"? Art can be selfindulgent, goofy, serious, altruistic, evil, or expressive, or any number of other things. In Why Art?, acclaimed graphic novelist Eleanor Davis (How To Be Happy) unpacks some of these concepts in ways both critical and positive. A work of art unto itself, Davis leavens her exploration with a sense of humor and a thirst for challenging preconceptions worthy of Magritte. SC, 5x6, 200pgs, PC  $14.99

(W/A/CA) Josh Simmons

Josh Simmons (Black River) returns with a harrowing and genre-bending collection of more than two dozen short stories. The individual stories in Flayed Corpse stand on their own and also complement each other in ways that only heighten the anxiety and dread pouring from the pages. Flayed Corpse also collects several collaborations between Simmons and other cartoonists, including James Romberger, Anders Nilsen, Tara Booth, Eroyn Franklin, Tom Van Deusen, and Eric Reynolds, amongst others.

164       GODHEAD GN    DEC171584

(W/A/CA) Ho Che Anderson

A sprawling contemporary saga with a science-fiction edge, Godhead explores the collision course between science and religion when a corporation creates a device that can talk to God. Is this humanity's salvation or the equivalent of a Doomsday machine? Godhead is Ho Che Anderson's most conceptually and thematically ambitious graphic novel to date, his first in over ten years. SC, 8x10, 192pgs, PC     SRP: $24.99

It's kind of nice to see Anderson "back in the saddle".  His stuff never really appealed to me (although the subject matter did), but it was somehow gratifying to just browse throuh his books. I also kinda dug that his parents got his name wrong (I guess); either an homage  combination of Ho Chi Minh and Che Guevera or a parody of them.
Well, the "Ho" in Ho Chi Minh is just a common Vietnamese family name, and "Chi Minh" means "bright (or enlightened) spirit. Nguyen Sinh Cung decided to call himself that when he became politically active and threatened enough to need a cover name.

And that little "creates a device that can talk to God" bit reminds me of a somewhat disturbing event from a couple of days ago: I fell on the sidewalk in front of my house, and a neighbor, a nurse, was kind enough to try to help me. Not help me get up: Too much risk of compounding injury. And others who tried to help followed her lead, pretty much just keeping me company and putting up with my howling as we waited for Urgences Sante. All I wanted was to be tilted upright instead of being stretched out in a very painful position (wedged against a stair), but she insisted that was too dangerous, we should wait for the ambulance.
Over an hour later they arrived. First thing they did was tilt me upright. A little later helped me get back on my feet and to the stretcher where they went through the customary checks for concussion, broken bones etc. I refused going to the highly highly highly recommended hospital, went back upstairs to my desk, and that was that.
So why am I yammering about this?
Well the nurse, who took charge of the situation told me that she was told what to do by an angel. Maybe she doesn't have a "device that can talk to God", but she talks to angels all the time, and they talk to her. My care was in the hands of someone who takes direction from dead people who tell her what to do. Wonderful.
Ah well. All's well that ends well. So onward, and try to stay vertical is my motto.

165       IS THIS GUY FOR REAL GN   DEC171601

(W/A/CA) Box Brown

Comedian and performer Andy Kaufman's resume was impressive - a popular role on the beloved sitcom Taxi, a high-profile stand-up career, and a surprisingly successful stint in professional wrestling. Although he was by all accounts a sensitive and thoughtful person, he's ironically best remembered for his various contemptible personas, which were so committed and so convincing that all but his closest family and friends were completely taken in. Why would someone so gentle-natured and sensitive build an entire career seeking the hatred of his audience? What drives a performer to solicit that reaction? Graphic novelist Box Brown takes on the complex and often hilarious life of Andy Kaufman. (STL070395) (C: 1-1-0) SC, 6x9, 272pgs, B&W $19.99
