Hey, hi, howdy, and welcome to Astronotes #272.
I didn't do that new "caught my eye" thing this month, mainly because I messed something up, costing me over a day's worth of time, so I'm in a bit of a hurry. My general impression is that while it's not a big month, there's still quite a lot of solid (if unspectacular) new projects to sink our teeth into, particularly in the Marvel section. So I'd better make tracks and get the monthly initial order done fast. You guys get to browse, hopefully at leisure.

But it's not all that bad: I just looked for the text file for Marvel Previews only, grabbed everything from there, and dropped it in here. Piece of cake. And I'm pretty sure I didn't leave in anything I should have chopped or chop anything I should have kept. Pretty sure.
Anyways, always looking for new ways to make life more unpleasant, they left out the order code numbers.

So one evening, a mother and her 10-year old son are walking along W.50th St. in Manhattan, heading back to their hotel from  MOMA, when they see several ladies of the evening lounging about. The boy asks his mom why they all seem to be just hanging out, and Mom says, "Oh, they're probably waiting for their husbands to pick them up after work."
A Presbyterian minister, just passing by, overhears and corrects the misinformation:
"Sorrry, son, but your mom's got it all wrong- they're hookers. Whores. They have sex with strangers for money."
The boy says "Gosh! Sex for money? But what if they have babies? What happens to them? The pastor replies, "See that building at 135 W.50th? That building happens to be the headquarters of Marvel Comics, and I've heard a lot of those babies end up working there.

Those of you who remember the late Bob Shields, who worked here around 1990, may feel a little twinge seeing the name Rick Zombo as part of the creative team.
Bob had some sort of weird fixation on Rick Zombo, a defenseman for the Detroit Red Wings. At one point, Bob's Zombo hockey card collection filled a 25 sheet 9-pocket binder. That's 225 cards- all Zombo. Now we've never been the types of people who would leave a person's little foibles unmocked. Whenever a likely "victim" came in, we'd ask him to sign one of Bob's Zombo cards. Thus he ended up with cards signed by the likes of Patrick Roy, Stephane Lebeau, John Slaney, Todd Ewen, Mike Keane, even Tim Wallach and Wade Boggs. Most pointed out that not only were they not Rick Zombo, they didn't even play hockey, but all went along with it once we explained about how Bob was a nice guy, just a wee bit crazy.
One person who still seemed perturbed after I got him to (grudgingly) sign was Mike Bossy. I was helping Bossy's brother at a card show he organized to benefit some charity, and naturally asked Mike to sign a Zombo card. He grunted "That's not me." I explained, and he called his brother over to tell him that the next time he organized a show, he'd bloody well better have some security around, visibly protecting his guests from the crazies (meaning people like me). I, on the other hand, was quite intimidated. Despite his reputation as a non-fighter, Bossy looked tough enough to break hockey sticks with his bare hands.
Anyways, Bob seemed happiest with cards signed by a couple of ex-Habs who'd stopped by the store: Chris Nilan and Gilles Lupien. I think he was tickled by Nilan's nickname "Knuckles", and Lupien was another player that Bob had a bit of a fixation on, probably because Bob was just a wee bit nuts.
And what makes me think that the Rick Zombo handling an art chore on this book is the former Red Wing? Well Zombo not the most common name imaginable, and the hockey player's Wikipedia entry describes him as "an accomplished artist" who worked on the "City of Heroes" comics series, so maybe...

A reason? Sure, there likely is, either self-created myth or "naturally grown". When we were kids, down on the farm, there was a local character named Joe Doyle who was forever hunting bears on Flagstaff Mountain, or at least talking about hunting nears there. I don't know that he ever actually got one, but he sure talked about it a lot. Thus he became "Joe the Bear Hunter, or just "Bear Hunter". Self made myth.
When I lived out west, there was a guy up in Gimli, Charlie, who just hated bears. He developed a pretty risky technique: He'd walk right up to a bear in the wild, stick his gun right in the bear's mouth, and pull the trigger. Then he'd grab one of the bear's paws and scratch his own left arm with the claws. Fooled the game warden into accepting (maybe even believing) that Charlie'd been attacked by the bear, and just killed it in self defense. The warden, being fully aware that Charlie was hunting out of season, couldn't prove anything. Well, Charlie the Bear Hunter got his comeuppance one night, when the warden caught him jacking by the side of the road. Lost his gun, his truck, and paid a hefty fine to boot. Now Charlie the Bear Hunter had what you might call a naturally grown nickname. I wonder if Turok had game warden problems when hunting dinosaurs...
